Stress is the way our body reacts to difficult situations. However, many people do not know that there are two different categories of stress: distress and eustress.
This is also known as “bad stress.” It occurs when a situation becomes difficult for a person and cannot confront that situation. In extreme cases it can cause anxiety or depression. The most common causes of distress include overwork, conflicts with co-workers, family members, financial problems, fears (i.e., fear of public speaking, fear of heights) of unrealistic expectations and the pattern of repetitive thinking.
Distress causes increased tension in the body and mind. On the other hand, it may seem that the anguish is endless, since it is often difficult to make a decision. Symptoms are high blood pressure, rapid and shallow breathing, muscle aches and headaches. Behavioral symptoms include stopping or overeating, negative coping skills (that is, avoiding the task at hand) and poorly adapting behaviors, such as smoking or drinking.
Eustress and its disorders differ in many ways. First, eustress is often a short-term sensation and is perceived as something that we as people can control. This focuses the energy to perform the task in question, which improves our performance in that task. In contrast, distress can be short or long term and is perceived as something that is beyond our control. Anguish is an unpleasant feeling, since it demotivates us and removes us from the energy we need to overcome a challenge or complete a task. It can also lead to other mental health problems such as depression and anxiety related disorders.
To conclude, distress arises when we perceive a difficult situation that we believe we are not able to confront the situation. On the contrary, eustress is a more adaptive perception of reaction to stressful situations
