For the most part, biochemistry is the study of chemical processes occurring in living organisms. However, this simple definition includes a diverse range of research that touches almost all aspects of our lives.

Biochemistry is the science that generally deals with substances such as enzymes, carbohydrates, amino acids, fats, proteins, hormones, DNA, RNA, dyes, and others that form the basis of life in living organisms.

Biochemistry describes the origin, composition, function, deficiency symptoms, biochemical reactions of living organisms. One can understand all the chemical reactions that occur at the molecular level in a living cell or organism by biochemistry. The questions like, What is life?, What is the death of an organism? , What are the basic elements and compounds that make us alive? etc. all are addressed by biochemists.

It will be difficult to overstate the importance of biochemistry in our lives. No doubt many of the amazing discoveries and transformations await us.

One of the most emerging issues in our society, the degradation of the environment, is addressed by biochemists. Some examples of ongoing work include improvements in photosynthesis efficiency to increase crop yield, bioremediation of polluted soils, development of new feedstocks, biofuel chemistry, genetic mapping of biodiversity monitoring systems, and methodologies for enhancing carbon capture. These and other biochemical technologies may play an important role in our efforts to find a sustainable way of living.

  • Many other, less visible aspects of our society are being changed and improved through biochemical research. The industry is converted because biochemistry is used to generate new materials with new properties or to improve the efficiency of old processes.
  • Law enforcement increasingly relies on biochemistry-based forensics to provide evidence in investigations. Archeology progresses rapidly as genetic and theoretical investigations into the remains of our ancestors illuminate much of human history and prehistory.
