Rio+20
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development , Rio+20 , will take place between the 13th and 22nd of June in the city of Rio de Janeiro . Rio+20 marks twenty years since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development , known as Eco-92 or Rio-92 , and will be another opportunity to reflect on the future we want for the world in the next twenty years and determine how it is possible to reduce poverty, promote social justice and protect the environment on a planet that is increasingly inhabited.
With the objective of renewing the political commitment to sustainable development, verifying what has been done in the last 20 years (since Eco-92), and what are the gaps that still exist in the implementation of the results, Rio+20 will bring together several leaders of State and Government of United Nations member countries, individuals from the private sector and NGOs.
Rio+20 will have as main themes: the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication , and the institutional framework for sustainable development .
Comprising three moments, Rio+20 will begin on June 13th, and until the 15th there will be the III Preparatory Committee Meeting, where government representatives will meet to negotiate the documents to be adopted at the Conference. Between June 16th and 19th, Dialogues for Sustainable Development are scheduled , a space open to civil society for the discussion of various themes inherent to Rio+20 . From the 20th to the 22nd of June, Rio+20 will have the presence of several Heads of State and Government of the member countries of the United Nations, then the High Level of the Conference will take place.
Many experts consider Rio+20 as a historic opportunity to discuss and develop ideas that can promote a more sustainable future, with more jobs, clean energy sources, more security, and a decent standard of living for all citizens. . According to Brice Lalonde, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, “ Rio+20 is one of the largest global meetings on sustainable development of our time”.
